How Maine’s top vice compares to every other state’s in one interactive map

The city guide app Foursquare and custom online mapmaker MapBox have combined to track each state’s most popular vice — that is, which sinful indulgence do people in each state prefer more than people in other states.

As Business Insider reported, people in New York were found to prefer picklebacks — shots of whiskey chased by shots of pickle brine — at a rate 3,173 percent higher than anyone else.

Many of the states’ respective vices come in the form of drugs and alcohol — Colorado prefers marijuana at a rate 1,125 percent higher than other states, for instance, while Montana really loves a dark beer called Moose Drool, at a rate 499 percent higher than anyone else.

But some states have decidedly more innocent vices.

Take Maine, for example.

As the excerpted map above shows, we’re particularly fanatical about our blueberry pie — we love it 481 percent more than people in other states, according to the Foursquare data.

As an added bonus, Foursquare compiled the top places in the state to get blueberry pie, at least as rated by Foursquare users.

Want to indulge in some blueberry pie in Maine? Try Mable’s Lobster Claw restaurant in Kennebunkport, Two Fat Cats bakery in Portland or Union River Lobster Pot in Ellsworth, among other selections mapped out.

In 2011, as many of you recall, the Maine Legislature named blueberry pie the official state dessert.

You can also take a quiz there to see if you can match the vice with the state where it’s most popular.
